In August, the Derrick Ernest Neighbourhood Centre (DEN) and Rainbow Families of WA proudly participated in the Linkwest Conference, an inspiring gathering of Community Resource and Neighbourhood Centres from across Western Australia. Joanne Boyling, Founder of Playgroups with Pride WA, and Paul Hadfield-Jia, from Gay Dads WA and board member of Rainbow Families of WA, attended to showcase their shared commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ families.
Their stall at the Centre Showcase event, which aimed to celebrate a success or a key initiative that the Centre is proud of, was a vibrant hub of connection and conversation. Delegates, Centre representatives, and officials stopped by to learn more about the work being done, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing their own experiences. The energy was electric, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
DEN received the Linkwest People’s Choice Award, presented by Annika Htun, Chairperson of Linkwest, who shared heartfelt feedback that affirmed the importance of visibility, lived experience, and community-led initiatives in shaping inclusive environments.
The Linkwest People’s Choice Award stands as a powerful recognition of the DEN’s and Rainbow Families of WA commitment to collaboration and grassroots advocacy. It highlights the meaningful progress made in fostering inclusive, supportive environments where LGBTQIA+ families feel valued and represented.
The enthusiastic engagement at the conference, from delegates visiting the stall to those casting their votes, reflects a growing momentum for change. This support not only affirms the importance of DEN’s work but also motivates continued efforts to strengthen community connections and build spaces where every family is welcomed and celebrated.
